Commedia all'italiana emerged in the late 1950s as Italy's signature film genre, blending sharp social satire with bitter humor. It began with Mario Monicelli's Big Deal on Madonna Street in 1958 and took its name from Pietro Germi's Divorce Italian Style in 1961. The films used comedy to critique class, marriage, divorce, and the Catholic Church, often ending on a bittersweet or tragic note rather than pure farce.
The style mixed physical slapstick with witty dialogue and character-driven stories set among the middle class. Key directors included Ettore Scola and Dino Risi, while actors like Alberto Sordi and Totò defined its tone through exaggerated gestures and ironic observations of daily life. By the early 1980s the movement faded, with La Terrazza often cited as its final work, though its influence shaped modern European cinema.
A later offshoot was commedia sexy all'italiana in the 1970s, which focused more on erotic humor and female nudity with less social commentary than the original genre. In recent years Italian comedy also appears in online skits, like Jessica Marchi's viral dating satire that plays on Italian cultural pride and stereotypes for comedic effect.
