About Ipswichma
Ipswich, Massachusetts is a coastal town in Essex County with a population of 13,785 as of the 2020 census. Incorporated in 1634, it is known as the "Birthplace of American Independence" and contains more pre-1725 historic homes than any other community in the nation. The town blends agricultural landscapes, salt marshes, and a vibrant tourism industry along the North Shore.
The community is defined by its natural attractions including Crane Beach, Willowdale State Forest, and the southern part of Plum Island. Roughly half of Ipswich is conservation land and open space, while the historic downtown center runs along the Ipswich River. It remains a residential town with shellfishing and boating as key local activities.
Ipswich operates under an open town meeting government with a five-member Select Board and Town Manager Brendan Sweeney. The 2026 Annual Town Meeting is scheduled for May 12, 2026, followed by the municipal election on May 19, 2026. Median home values are around $649,100 with a residential tax rate of $11.15 per $1,000.
