About Hunterny
Hunter, New York is a town in Greene County located in the Catskill Mountains. The town includes the village of Hunter and the hamlet of Tannersville, with a combined population of about 3,035 as of the 2020 census. The area is known for outdoor recreation, including hiking trails like the 9.4-mile Hunter and Southwest Hunter route that leads to Hunter Mountain and its fire tower views.
The village of Hunter sits at 1,588 feet elevation along New York State Route 23A and had 429 residents in 2020. It was originally called Edwardsville after a local tannery and incorporated in 1896. Median property values in the area reached around $460,000 to $488,000 in 2024, with a median resident age of 65.9 years, significantly higher than the New York state average.
Hunter Mountain is part of the Catskill 3500 list, attracting hikers from April through November. The region also supports hunting activities regulated by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation through its official hunter education program. The town borders Woodstock and Saugerties in Ulster County and has a rural character with a 2024 population estimated at 409 in the village area.
