About Gills
Wikipedia explains gills are respiratory organs that extract dissolved oxygen from water and release carbon dioxide. Fish use gills located on the sides of the head, where water passes over thin filaments containing capillaries to absorb oxygen directly from the water. The structure uses countercurrent exchange to maximize oxygen uptake since water holds far less oxygen than air.
Gills also appear in other aquatic animals like molluscs and crustaceans, and in some amphibian larvae. They are composed of gill arches, filaments, and lamellae that increase surface area for gas exchange. Unlike fish, mammals such as whales use lungs instead of gills to breathe air.
