Forager are individuals who collect wild edible plants, fungi, and other foods from nature rather than from cultivated farms. The practice has grown in popularity in the 21st century, with people gathering herbs, fruits, mushrooms, and roots for personal use or restaurant menus. Notable foragers include Sean Sherman and Alexis Nikole Nelson, who share knowledge about local flora and sustainable harvesting practices.
Urban foraging has become a way for some to reduce grocery costs while connecting with local ecosystems. In London, Angus Morton reported saving £400 monthly by foraging wild garlic, nettles, and leek from parks and cemeteries. In Lithuania’s Dzūkija region, mushroom foraging is a cultural tradition where foragers use skilled wayfinding through forests to supply local and cross-border markets.
Community-focused foraging groups have also emerged to reclaim cultural heritage and provide education. Afro Foragers, created by Hannah Vega, serves as a gathering space for Black foragers in the United States to share wild food and medicine knowledge. However, marine foraging has faced scrutiny, as a Changi intertidal foraging group in Singapore disbanded in July 2026 after public controversy over harvested wildlife.
