New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is hosting its fourth annual Fall Foliage Photo Contest, with details set to be announced on October 2, 2025 during National Fall Foliage Week. The contest encourages people to capture and share autumn scenery across New York as leaves begin changing statewide. Northern areas like the Adirondacks are already showing significant color, with up to 55% change reported around Whiteface Mountain and Tupper Lake this week.
Fall foliage typically peaks in October across most of the United States, though timing varies by region and elevation. In the Northeast, New York’s Adirondacks and Pennsylvania’s areas near Pittsburgh are expected to reach peak color around mid to late October, with Pittsburgh forecast for about October 20. New Jersey’s northwestern counties should peak around October 13, while central and southern areas hit peak closer to October 20. Northern Indiana’s peak is projected for October 27, with most of the state at peak by November 2.
In the West, Northern Nevada was named one of Lonely Planet’s top 10 fall foliage destinations for 2026, with peak color expected around October 25 near Reno. Washington state’s foliage usually bursts in mid to late October, though western regions may see a slightly later arrival this year. Weather factors like temperature and rainfall can shift peak timing by several days, so checking local forecasts before trips is recommended.
