About Eagleray
Eagle ray are cartilaginous fish in the family Myliobatidae with long, whip-like tails and diamond-shaped bodies. They swim by flapping pectoral fins like wings and can breach several metres above water. Most species crush molluscs and crustaceans with flattened teeth and give birth to up to six live young.
The group includes the Spotted eagle ray and common eagle ray, found in tropical and temperate oceans worldwide. They prefer shallow coastal waters but can dive to 300 metres. Sizes range from 48 centimetres to over 5 metres in wingspan.
Some species like the common eagle ray are listed as critically endangered by the IUCN due to fishing pressure.
