About Coast
A coast is the area where land meets the sea or ocean, shaped by waves, tides, wind, and storms that erode and deposit materials over time. Britannica describes it as a dynamic boundary supporting diverse landscapes like sandy beaches, rocky cliffs, and mangroves. Coasts provide critical resources, biodiversity, and serve as hubs for transportation and economic activities for human societies.
The geological makeup and sediment supply determine whether a coast is rocky with cliffs or sandy with dunes and beaches. Natural forces constantly reshape these environments, while climate change and rising sea levels add new challenges. Many of the world’s largest cities are located along coastlines due to their economic and cultural importance.
Coasts also support unique ecosystems such as coral reefs and salt marshes that contribute to global biodiversity. Conservation efforts including habitat restoration and sustainable management help coasts recover from environmental damage. The term is often distinguished from “shore” and “beach” in English lessons, where coast refers broadly to land along the sea.
