About Cat Glaucoma
Merck Veterinary Manual describes feline glaucoma as high intraocular pressure from impaired drainage of aqueous humor, which can damage the retina and optic nerve. It is uncommon in cats compared to dogs and often develops secondary to uveitis or tumors, though primary glaucoma occurs in breeds like Siamese.
Signs include a dilated pupil, red or cloudy cornea, squinting, and a firm eyeball, along with pain and behavioral changes. Immediate veterinary care is critical to lower pressure and preserve vision, usually with medication or surgery. The condition typically requires lifelong management and can lead to blindness if untreated.
