About Cast Caste
India’s caste system is a historic social structure that divides society into endogamous groups based on birth, occupation, and lineage. Membership is hereditary and largely unchanging for an individual, governing marriage, work, and social interaction. The term comes from the Portuguese word casta, meaning “pure lineage,” and was applied to Indian social divisions after 1498. The system combines religious symbolism with rules of social organization and political power.
The traditional framework includes four main categories known as varnas: Brahmins (priests), Kshatriyas (warriors), Vaishyas (merchants), and Shudras (service providers), with Dalits historically placed outside this hierarchy as “untouchables”. Within these, there are thousands of sub-groups called jatis that determine specific community identity and roles. The British conducted detailed caste censuses from 1881 to 1931, recording over 4,000 castes in British India.
Today the government recognizes Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes for reservation policies in education and employment. A caste certificate serves as official proof for accessing these benefits, issued at state or district level. While legally abolished in India, caste continues to influence marriage, occupation, and social customs for many communities.
