About Babygram
A babygram is an X-ray that captures an infant’s entire body in a single image. It is used in pediatric medicine to evaluate skeletal abnormalities, congenital malformations, and respiratory or gastrointestinal conditions in neonates. The procedure typically uses an Anteroposterior AP projection, where the baby lies flat while the X-ray is taken from front to back.
The technique has historically played a central role in diagnosing conditions like skeletal dysplasia and suspected nonaccidental trauma in infants. It allows clinicians to assess both the thorax and abdomen at once, which is helpful for newborns with breathing difficulties. Due to radiation safety concerns, its routine use has declined in recent years as ultrasound and MRI have become more common alternatives.
Outside of medical contexts, Babygram also refers to an Instagram photo trend where bold text is overlaid on infant portraits for instant recognition among parents and caregivers. The term also appeared in 1940s Australia as the name of a 3-valve radio receiver design published by Radio and Hobbies magazine.
