About Aapilc
The California Asian & Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus (AAPILC) is a group of state legislators that advocates for the needs of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community in California. Founded in 2001, the caucus focuses on issues like immigrant support, affordable housing, K-12 and higher education, and combating anti-Asian hate. It represents about 16% of California’s population and works to increase AAPI representation in government and policy.
Current leadership includes Assemblymember Mike Fong as Chair, Assemblymember Stephanie Nguyen as Assembly Vice-Chair, and Senator Dr. Aisha Wahab as Senate Vice-Chair, who took office in August 2024. The caucus has championed major initiatives such as the 2021 $166.5 million API Equity Budget and legislation making Lunar New Year a state holiday through Assemblymember Evan Low’s AB 2596. It also honors AAPI heritage through events like the annual Heritage Month celebrations and Larry Itliong Day.
The AAPILC collaborates with community organizations and state agencies to advance data equity and culturally accessible resources for AAPI communities. Recent efforts include supporting the relaunch of the White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders. The caucus continues to push for policies that address systemic inequities and promote AAPI empowerment across California.
