Gen Z is trading happy hour for a workout, and the numbers back it up. A recent survey found that 53% of adults between 18 and 34 have chosen a fitness or wellness experience over drinks or nightlife, with run clubs, workout classes, and group fitness becoming the new default way to socialize for a generation that grew up watching the effects of alcohol-centered culture on the generations before them.
The shift isn’t purely about health either. Mintel data shows 30% of U.S. Gen Z consumers are spending more on gyms and fitness classes than a year ago, driven by the social element as much as the physical one.
Friendly competition, shared goals, and built-in accountability are a significant part of the appeal, which is why apps like Steppa are gaining traction with younger users. Steppa lets friends put real money behind their daily step goals, combining the social accountability of a workout group with actual financial stakes, hit your goal and split the prize pool, miss a day and your entry fee is gone.
For a generation redefining what it means to go out, the new happy hour might just be a step challenge. #SteppaPartner
