Pop Culture Connect@popcultureconnect An unusually fiery sunset over the New York–New Jersey area on September 25, 2026 arrived as a powerful early-season nor’easter approached the Northeast, naturally reminding some residents of the skies surrounding Superstorm Sandy in 2012. The comparison is especially eerie because the current storm is expected to bring heavy rain, strong winds, coastal flooding and beach erosion to the region; the National Weather Service has issued coastal flood warnings and wind advisories across much of the NYC metropolitan area. Forecasters, however, are not predicting another Sandy—the two storms differ substantially in their origins, structure and expected severity. There actually is some science behind dramatic skies appearing around major weather systems, although a red sunset itself doesn’t predict a dangerous storm. At sunset, sunlight travels through much more atmosphere, scattering shorter blue wavelengths and leaving reds and oranges; high and mid-level clouds can then reflect that reddened light back toward the ground. NOAA notes that the sloping cloud sheets associated with hurricanes and mid-latitude storms can be particularly well positioned to produce spectacular red-orange skies. So the ominous appearance can genuinely be influenced by the same large weather system moving into an area—but seeing one is not evidence that a hurricane or similarly destructive storm is about to arrive. @luke_122103 Atop the fuckong fear mongering. This nor Easter is nothing like sandy. These people need to fu king educate themselves on the differences of sandy vs this storm. The storm won't even be as big as Sandy. Sandy was a superstorm which is when a tropical system and a nor Easter combine into one storm. I can even go on and on about the differences. Sick of the stupid fucking panic. I've studied meteorology and wanted to be in the business and this is nothing what people panicking say. Please educate yourselves before you post this bullshit.
