No Major Hurricane Hit the U.S. by September 21 By September 21, 2026, the U.S. had avoided a major hurricane landfall, and the Atlantic hurricane season was unusually quiet. Tropical Storm Fay, the sixth named storm of the season, remained over the open Atlantic and was not expected to threaten the United States. As of that date, the Atlantic had recorded zero hurricanes and zero major hurricanes, compared with the 1991–2020 average of roughly four hurricanes by that point in the season. The quiet pattern was notable because September is normally the heart of hurricane season. Forecasters linked the reduced Atlantic activity in part to a strengthening El Niño, which can increase wind shear and make it harder for tropical systems to develop and intensify. However, that did not mean the U.S. was completely free of severe weather.
