NC Weather Authority@ncwx_authority 🔴 Update: Highway 12 South of Oregon Inlet remains closed until further notice (likely through the weekend, at least if not longer at this point) due to severe ocean overwash, and the road has buckled and washed out in about a 1,000-foot stretch on Pea Island in Dare County. As of this evening, the high tide is now hammering the road and will only get worse. NCDOT crews spent all day rebuilding the dune line in the Canal Zone, but we will see if that even holds through the evening. Highway 12 is also closed on the North end of Ocracoke due to flooding. All ferries remain suspended across the Outer Banks, but winds are expected to improve tomorrow based on my latest thinking, and Sound class ferries from Ocracoke to the mainland could return to service for Ocracoke folks. NCDOT is also consulting with partners and stakeholders about potentially activating emergency ferry service to Hatteras Island. Dare County says "the agency is completing preliminary work now so service can be established efficiently if the decision is made to activate it. Even if emergency service is approved, officials said it would likely take several days to mobilize and begin operations, and ferry service would depend on weather and sea conditions." I'll keep you posted on any pressing updates, Outer Banks folks. Weather conditions will keep improving tomorrow, but high tides are still expected, and the Full Moon/King Tides will keep them high. -Ethan

@mihalylukacs Unfortunately, it may be time as a state to have a serious conversation about the Outer Banks and the feasibility of maintaining infrastructure when Climate Change and Mother Nature have other plans.
