It is one of the most strikingly colored primates, with a combination of red, orange, black, and white fur. Its golden face is framed by a distinctive white beard, giving it an almost elegant appearance. Despite its calm expression, the red shanked douc is an active and highly social animal. It can live in groups of several dozen individuals and spends much of its time moving through the forest canopy. Its diet consists mainly of leaves, flowers, and fruits, with its digestive system adapted to process fibrous plant material. These monkeys are agile climbers and rely on their ability to move quickly through the treetops when threatened. They are generally not aggressive, but remain alert to potential dangers and use the dense forest canopy as protection from predators. The red shanked douc is classified as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Habitat loss from deforestation and agricultural expansion, along with illegal hunting for the pet trade and traditional medicine, has placed significant pressure on wild populations.
