Some prehistoric animals sound like they were invented for a monster movie. Every one of these was real, and most of them make their modern relatives look tiny. Titanoboa was a 50-foot snake that could swallow crocodiles whole, and Megalodon was a 60-foot shark with a bite strong enough to crush a car. Quetzalcoatlus had a 35-foot wingspan, which put a flying reptile at roughly the size of a small plane. Then there is Therizinosaurus, a plant eater with claws over three feet long that nobody has been able to explain. Deinosuchus might be the most unsettling of all, a 30-foot relative of the crocodile that could launch itself out of the water and take down dinosaurs. The real history of the planet turns out to be stranger than most of what people make up about it.
