Superior Destinations@ocean.destinations During the 1960s, artists and designers imagined what everyday life in space might look like as human spaceflight rapidly advanced. One recurring vision featured compact cylindrical habitats designed to provide astronauts with everything they needed while living far from Earth. These imagined interiors were carefully organized to make efficient use of limited space. Control panels allowed astronauts to operate spacecraft systems, while sleeping areas and storage compartments were built into the compact environment. The designs also reflected an understanding of the challenges of living in microgravity. Instead of relying on traditional floors and ceilings, astronauts would need to work and rest within an environment where orientation was very different from life on Earth. These futuristic concepts captured the optimism of the 1960s space age. At a time when humans had only recently begun traveling beyond Earth, many people believed permanent space habitats and comfortable living in orbit could become a reality in the near future.
