Did you know that toilet paper has a surprisingly short history? The first rolls of toilet paper were produced in the 1850s by Joseph Gayetty in the United States, and they were primarily marketed for medicated use. Before Gayetty’s invention, people relied on various materials for hygiene, including leaves, grass, corncobs, and even sea shells – definitely not what most people would consider comfortable today! The concept of using paper for personal hygiene did not catch on right away. Many households continued to use the unconventional materials well into the 20th century, often due to the high cost of paper and societal norms. It wasn’t until the 1930s that toilet paper began to become widely available in soft, convenient rolls we’re used to today, complete with perforated sheets designed for easy tearing.
