Slate@slate Slate's Rebecca Onion called Rachel McCarthy James, who wrote the book Whack Job: A History of Axe Murder. “I think if there’s an ax murder you want to get really silly about, it’s Lizzie Borden,” James sasid, who watched the Netflix miniseries, Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story. She observed that the show doesn’t exactly break new ground; like every Borden adaptation, it presumes Lizzie, who was acquitted of this crime, actually did the deed. The only truly groundbreaking Lizzie Borden adaptation, James said, would be one that presumed what James herself believes: Lizzie Borden was innocent.
