In late May 2023, enormous snow drifts reaching nearly 25 feet, or about 8 meters, were recorded along the Angel Lake Scenic Byway near Elko, Nevada. The towering walls of snow created an extraordinary sight as crews worked to reopen the mountain road. The heavy snowfall was the result of an unusually large snowpack that accumulated across the western United States during the 2022 to 2023 winter season. Nevada experienced particularly significant snowfall in its mountainous regions, leaving many roads buried beneath deep layers of snow. Nevada Department of Transportation crews used heavy machinery to carve through the massive snowbanks and clear the Angel Lake Scenic Byway. The effort was part of preparations to reopen the mountain route ahead of Memorial Day weekend. The towering snow walls offered a striking visual reminder of just how much snow had accumulated during the winter. Even in late spring, large sections of the mountain pass remained buried beneath several meters of compacted snow.
