There’s a growing design conversation around the “death of color”, the idea that everyday life has slowly become dominated by white, black, gray and silver. You can see it clearly with cars. In Axalta’s 2025 global automotive color report, white, black and gray alone accounted for 74% of vehicles worldwide, while brighter colors made up a much smaller share. The same shift has happened in homes and consumer design, where minimalist interiors, gray flooring, white walls, stainless steel appliances and neutral furniture became extremely common. Designers have even coined terms like “millennial gray” to describe the monochrome aesthetic that became especially popular over the last decade. Part of the appeal is practical. Neutral colors are easier to match, tend to age more safely with changing trends, and can make products easier to resell. But after years of minimalism, warmer colors and more expressive interiors are starting to return, suggesting the pendulum may already be swinging back. So while color isn’t literally disappearing, the world around us really has become noticeably more neutral than it once was.
