NC Weather Authority@ncwx_authority ⛔️Outer Banks Update: I’m getting inundated with questions about when Highway 12 will reopen South of Oregon Inlet. Severe ocean overwash has occurred and damaged the road on Pea Island in Dare County. It seems visitors and even some residents were caught quite off guard on Hatteras Island. This was well forecasted, so guess we need to figure out that. A spokesperson for Dare County tells me, “It will likely be tomorrow, or possibly Saturday, before NCDOT is able to fully assess the situation and determine what repairs will be needed. Once that assessment is complete, decisions can be made about access.” I’m anticipating additional Coastal Flooding for at least the next 3 high tide cycles (see previous messages) At this point, if you have interests or travel to the Outer Banks, folks North of Oregon Inlet can access the Outer Banks fine. Hatteras and Ocracoke Island remain cut off from the mainland until further notice. Ocracoke will probably be fine via the second -class Sound-Class ferries, and definitely by Saturday, based on my weather forecasts. Hatteras will be at the waiting of Highway 12 reopening or any other alternative accesses that officials decide. As always I’ll keep you updated, I cover the Outer Banks they’ll get my attention just like all the other NC counties get! -Ethan

@discretionunderground Great updates. Not surprised it is after all shifting sand always has been always will be. I love OBX south 12 but the ocean and weather always win the battles. Best to all that are there prayers for you all and all officials in charge of repairs and saftey.

@jadedinnc Really appreciate the timely, accurate updates you provide! Hope the folks messaging you are being kind and expressing gratitude for your forecasting. When traveling, it's a personal responsibility to assess the conditions you're traveling under in order to stay safe- which includes researching the local authorities and sources of news/information ahead of time so that essential communications aren't missed. I would hazard a guess that at least some folks being "taken by surprise" didn't take appropriate steps and are mistakenly attempting to offload their own accountability onto others (if the forecasting was as accurate and well communicated as you say). You're providing a public safety service that goes above and beyond, so if people have misdirected criticism stemming from their own lack of preparedness, I hope it rolls right off and you don't take it to heart! (I'm sure constructive feedback is welcome, but we all know how some vacationers can be when it comes to their sense of entitlement...)

@channonshaffee Have they given an update on when they’ll fix the road and allow travel? We are staying in waves and there has been zero guidance on how we proceed from here to try and get home.
