Metro is celebrating its 50th anniversary with five commemorative SmarTrip card designs highlighting different decades of the transit system’s history. Beginning Thursday, Sept. 24, a new design will be released every two weeks, with about 20,000 cards of each design available at select Metro stations. Customers can check availability at http://Metro50.com. The cards will feature historic images and milestones from the 1970s through the 2010s and beyond. Multiple designs may be available at some stations, with signs posted on fare vending machines identifying which card is being offered. The release schedule is: Sept. 24 — 1970s: Metro pylons and the system’s iconic waffle-vaulted station ceilings. Oct. 8 — 1980s: Construction crews working on the Potomac River crossing. Oct. 22 — 1990s: A tunnel boring machine used during construction of some of Metro’s deepest stations. Nov. 5 — 2000s: The Metro Rail map and a bus marking the completion of the originally planned 103-mile, 83-station system in 2001. Nov. 19 — 2010s and beyond: The 7000-series trains, which debuted in 2015. Metro also plans to offer a special Metro-branded SmarTrip card and trading-card collecting book at its holiday pop-up shop for customers looking to collect all five designs.
