NC Weather Authority@ncwx_authority ⛔️Update: As expected, significant Oceanside flooding has occurred on NC Highway 12 in Dare County, from Pea Island South of Oregon Inlet to Rodanthe. The road is not only underwater in spots, but it has also buckled and cracked on Pea Island by the visitor center and is not drivable. I highly doubt the road will reopen today or tomorrow, and depending on how damaged it gets over the next few high-tide cycles, 12 could be closed into the weekend. Additional Coastal Flooding is expected with high tide this evening and both high tides on Friday. I have no doubt the hard-working men and women of the NCDOT will do their best to fix and reopen it ASAP. I’ve seen folks already working in horrible weather conditions to make it better. The good news is the north end of Ocracoke (image 3) has fared well, and 12 looks good there for this tide cycle. All North Carolina ferries are suspended except for the Southport Fort Fisher. However, if the Hatteras to Ocracoke Ferry resumes and the Ocracoke Second Class Sound ferries resume over the next 48 hours, folks could leave Hatteras Island via Ocracoke, assuming 12 on the North end of Ocracoke holds up. Still, it could very well end up with dune breaches too at some point. Folks ask, "Well, why are you reporting on this if it always happens?" Well, I forecast the weather; I am here to inform people. Folks live here, and people vacation here, who rely on my forecasts to know when flooding will occur. I’ll continue to forecast the Outer Banks no matter what! Photos: NCDOT live cams.

We were supposed to be on Ocracoke through Weds but left on Tuesday, stayed in Frisco Tuesday night and continued on up and across Pea Island yesterday when the ranger at Cape Hatteras told us it was already starting to seep. In Nags Head now and the wind /surf is crazy, wild to see in person! 2 years post Helene and now we’re riding out a nor’easter 🌀🌬️
