Fact | History | News@factslice To the Struggle Against World Terrorism, widely known as the Teardrop Memorial, stands as a 100-foot-tall bronze monument located in Bayonne, New Jersey, overlooking the Upper New York Bay. Officially gifted to the United States by the Russian government in 2006, the monument was designed by renowned Russian sculptor Zurab Tsereteli to honor the victims of the September 11 attacks and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. The design features a massive bronze tower split down the center by a jagged gash, inside of which hangs a 40-foot, 4-ton stainless steel teardrop that symbolizes global grief and solidarity. At its 11-sided granite base, the names of nearly 3,000 victims are inscribed, providing a solemn space for remembrance directly across from where the Twin Towers once stood. Though highly impactful, the monument has also adapted to shifting geopolitical climates over the years. Positioned at Harbor View Park on the former Military Ocean Terminal, it offers visitors a direct line of sight to the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty. While originally dedicated in a ceremony attended by world leaders, including a groundbreaking with Russian President Vladimir Putin, local officials quietly covered all instances of Putin's name on the dedication plaques following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Despite these political changes, the monument remains a permanent fixture of the New York Harbor area, serving as a powerful and enduring testament to international compassion and shared mourning.
