Lacoste, Raf Simons, Joy Division, Supreme, Adidas and more by Peter Saville ⛰️ 🐊 Peter Saville is a 70 year old graphic designer based in England. He began his career creating record sleeves, eventually creating the label ‘Factory Records’ and signed Joy Division, it was the creation of their iconic album cover for “Unkown Pleasures” which turned Peter into a graphic design icon. That design, featuring a series of white waveforms on a black background, is now one of the most recognizable and enduring images in popular music history. Interestingly, the image is a data visualization of the radio emissions from a pulsar (specifically, CP 1919), which Saville found in The Cambridge Encyclopaedia of Astronomy. The band had chosen the image themselves, and Saville presented it in a stark, minimalist format with no band name or album title on the cover, something almost unheard of at the time. Saville’s design sensibility was heavily influenced by modernist art and European graphic design (like Jan Tschichold and Josef Müller-Brockmann), which he brought into pop culture via Factory Records. His work for Joy Division and later for New Order (which formed after Ian Curtis’s death) helped shape the visual identity of post-punk and synth-pop. These design tropes went on to heavily influence streetwear culture and modern music. Brands like Supreme and Raf Simon’s regularly licensed his artwork to print on their clothing. Virgil Abloh and Kanye West heavily referenced Savilles style in the creation of the iconic “Yeezus” album cover. And of course, Lacoste hired him in 2013 to design their best polo shirts of all time. He’s a graphic design icon.
