Investigative journalist Nicky Hager has launched a new election-season book alleging the Taxpayers’ Union and an interconnected group of right-wing campaigners have helped shift New Zealand politics to the right. But the Taxpayers’ Union has rejected the book as a “full frontal attack”, while executive director Jordan Williams and the organisation’s board have strongly denied its most serious allegation: that a payment was made to settle a sexual-harassment claim against Williams. Hager’s latest book, Dirty Work: The Taxpayers’ Union and New Zealand’s Hard Right, was released to a packed Unity Books in Wellington on Tuesday night, with hundreds of political staffers, journalists and political junkies crammed into the store.
