Tracks that sound romantic, patriotic, nostalgic or even upbeat can hide stories about obsession, bitterness, violence, war and heartbreak beneath the surface. From The Police’s “Every Breath You Take” to Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.,” the meaning listeners attach to a song isn’t always what the artist intended. Sometimes the contrast is exactly what makes the song so powerful. These records became massive anyway, proving that a catchy chorus can completely disguise what’s actually being said. Which rock song did you misunderstand for years?

@kart.yoda Of course so many Americans have completely missed the meaning of so many of these songs - simple, one dimensional people whose country is 160th in world educational ranking, and who are used to being spoon fed simple soundbites answers. The greatest was the COVID-19 era mass push back against government measures and adoption of RATM's Killing In The Name, only to discover that barely a single American mesmerised by "fk you I won't do you as you tell me" understood the song at all 😂
@freethinkingpunker Anyone who thought fortunate son was patriotic was either a moron or deaf, the lyrics are very clear.

@lotusb47 Sorry Tom...441 is a road that runs right through U Of Florida. I was that girl back then, who knew there was a great big world out there. Have had a wild and wonderful life but nothing was as much fun as Gainesville...Class of 69!!!

@alexander.warren24601 Weird that people aren't listening to the lyrics, I mean, these songs are old enough to have the lyrics in the cd case if you got them. This seems bait-y to me
