Creator’s Almanac@creators.almanac The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ most famous gimmick started at an actual strip club. On July 3, 1983, just months after forming, the band played a gig at the Kit Kat Club in Hollywood, a rough around the edges strip joint rather than a typical rock venue. Dancers performed on stage right alongside the bands that played there, and the Chili Peppers figured that if the girls were stripping down, they may as well match the energy. They walked out for their set wearing nothing but a single tube sock each. It worked better than they expected. Word spread through the LA club scene fast, and before long, some venues were booking the band specifically on the condition that they perform the sock routine again. What started as one strip club gig turned into a genuine calling card, one the band kept bringing back for special shows well into the 1990s before finally retiring it as they got older. Bassist Flea summed up its legacy bluntly years later. “We put socks on our d*cks, and we’re never going to outrun it.”
