The San Francisco Standard@sfstandard Exclusive: City officials do not track the number of data centers in San Francisco, according to the Planning Department, which is in charge of approving building permits. San Francisco doesn’t even have a specific land use designation for data centers — something experts told The Standard is a crucial starting point for regulating development. While most of the Bay Area’s data center buildout has been in the South Bay, developers have started eyeing San Francisco itself. Private equity firm Nestory Park Capital appears to be looking at land in Dogpatch for a data center. But some leaders, including Supervisor Shamann Walton whose district includes Dogpatch and Bayview-Hunters Point, are pushing back. Last week, Walton proposed a 45-day zoning moratorium, cosponsored by Supervisors Connie Chan, Jackie Fielder, and Chyanne Chen, that would pause approval on data centers and require city staff to develop permanent controls against them. @chord_yoga "xyz capital of the world" - to contrast with what I hear most visitors from near and far say "... is a village" - and wouldn't that be nice. To stick with the actual qualities of the place and its people and stick em labels - somewhere else :)
