Horses were domesticated thousands of years ago, and even at the beginning of the 20th century they remained essential for transportation, agriculture, warfare, and moving goods. In 1900, automobiles were still relatively new, powered flight had not yet been achieved, and no human being had ever flown a controlled powered airplane. The Wright brothers accomplished that milestone in 1903. Just 86 years after that first powered flight, the B-2 Spirit made its first flight in 1989. Humanity had gone from a fragile aircraft traveling 120 ft in 12 seconds to a flying wing capable of intercontinental missions, aerial refueling, carrying large weapons payloads, and using advanced materials and shaping to dramatically reduce its radar signature. Horses were still a major component of military logistics during World War I, yet within the lifespan of a single person born around that period, humanity developed jet propulsion, radar, nuclear weapons, computers, satellites, and eventually the B-2. Few comparisons demonstrate the speed of 20th century technological advancement as dramatically.
