Fashion in the early 1900s reflected a world where clothing was considerably more formal, structured, and tied to social expectations than it is today. Men commonly wore suits, waistcoats, collared shirts, ties, and hats even during ordinary public activities, while women’s fashion emphasized long skirts, fitted bodices, elaborate hats, and silhouettes shaped by corsets. Clothing was also more strongly divided by gender, class, and occasion, and mass produced casualwear had not yet transformed everyday wardrobes. Even activities now associated with shorts and T shirts often had their own comparatively formal standards of dress. Over the following century, fashion changed alongside industrialization, women entering more areas of public life, youth culture, new synthetic fabrics, mass production, globalized manufacturing, sportswear, music, and changing social attitudes. Hemlines shortened, corsets largely disappeared from everyday clothing, trousers became commonplace for women, and items such as jeans, sneakers, hoodies, and T shirts moved from specialized or working garments into everyday fashion. By the 2020s, someone can comfortably leave home in clothing that would have been considered radically informal in 1900, making the transformation of everyday dress one of the clearest visual examples of how much society has changed in little more than a century.
