Global Vox@the.globalvox Japan’s Foreign Ministry has faced criticism over costumes used during an anti-terrorism and anti-kidnapping drill in Tokyo. The Independent reported that photographs from the September 10 exercise showed a person playing a terrorist wearing a head covering that some social media users said resembled traditional Arab or Middle Eastern attire. Following the criticism, the ministry removed the related photographs and issued a clarification. Japan’s Foreign Ministry said the role-players included both Japanese and foreign nationals and that the depiction, including the clothing, was not intended to suggest or associate with any particular ethnicity, region or religion. The ministry said any misunderstanding was unintended. Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said the ministry had taken the various opinions seriously while stressing the importance of the training for protecting Japanese nationals overseas. Japan has conducted these drills since 2018, drawing lessons from the 2016 Dhaka terrorist attack. Via: The Independent
