What feels like a lifetime ago, I spent my nights photographing live music and had the enormous pleasure of photographing one of my musical idols, John Farnham. Today I’m in Switzerland, but my heart is very much back in Melbourne as John’s friends, fellow artists and thousands of fans come together at Rod Laver Arena to celebrate his extraordinary music and legacy. I’ve seen John perform at Melbourne Park countless times over the years. Like so many Australians, his music has been part of the soundtrack of my life. Those shows were always special. That voice, that band and that incredible connection he had with an audience. Tonight will be bittersweet. Yesterday, John’s family shared that his health has declined and that he now needs around the clock care. It makes tonight’s celebration feel particularly poignant, especially knowing John won’t be able to be there himself. There will be 120 artists and musicians on that stage tonight, but in many ways there will only be one person in the room. John Farnham is a national treasure. A living legend. And for generations of Australians, a voice attached to an extraordinary number of memories. I wish I could be there tonight.
