📺✨ @Netflix’s sequel to “A Different World,” filmed at some of Atlanta’s HBCUs, premieres September 24. The sequel shares its name with the original show, which followed Denise Huxtable as she left home to attend Hillman College, a fictional HBCU.⁠ 🎓 The new Netflix show catches up with that world a generation later, following Deborah Wayne as she begins her freshman year at her parents' (Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne) HBCU alma mater. ⁠“We wanted to pay homage to the original series and carry the legacy through,” says Atlanta resident @feliciapride, the sequel’s showrunner.⁠ ⁠ Atlanta, home to the largest cluster of historically Black colleges and universities in the nation (@morehouse1867, @spelman_college, @cau1988, and @morrisbrownatl), shaped the original series through its HBCU history and now serves as the foundation for the sequel. ⁠ Atlanta’s own @iamjasmineguy, who played iconic Southern belle Whitley Gilbert in the original and reprises her role in the sequel. Guy has a deep connection to the city’s HBCUs: Her father, Reverend Dr. William Vincent Guy, taught at his alma mater, Morehouse College, and led the Friendship Baptist Church. For Guy, it was heartening to work with so many Atlanta students. “These babies from the AU Center . . . off the chain,” she says. “I’m like, These are the extras? Just beautiful, stunning, showing up, being professional. I felt like a proud mama.”⁠ ⁠ Recent Morehouse alum @dasan.frazier appears in the role of Xavier, a campus livestreamer.
