REVIEW: The title, cover, & blurb of this book immediately had me stoked to read it as I love stories with ghosts & paranormal elements! This is a genre-blender mixing horror, mystery, fantasy, & a dash of romance, centering around a complex FMC who comes from a family where the ability to see spirits has been passed down. There’s a murder mystery, lots of ghostly encounters, & some major found family vibes! When I learned that this was the author’s debut novel, I was impressed—the world-building & character development are great! The story is told in Tatum’s 3rd-person POV, & I was immediately immersed in the gripping opening on the subway where she avoids a ghost b/c she knows that once spirits realize she can see them, they notice her too. Tatum’s ability is referred to as “The Sight,” & she’s spent years trying to ignore it. From there, we learn more about her complicated history with her mother, who’s imprisoned for murder. Their relationship is strained and full of cryptic answers from Amarina. When Tatum’s friend Mischa is murdered, the pacing picks up, & more spirits enter the story that Tatum can’t ignore. I found myself flipping pages b/c I needed to know what was going to happen next. There’s also a romantic subplot, but it mostly stays in the background. The story is quite layered—the murder mystery is connected to Tatum’s mother’s past, & there are ominous warnings from spirits. The idea that ghosts want to be remembered is echoed throughout the story, along with themes of grief & memory. 🚨 CONTINUED ON NEXT SLIDE WITH QOTD! #spookyreads #thrillerbooks The chapters are short to medium length & several end on mini cliffhangers, which made it difficult to put down. My only minor issues were some sections where I was a bit confused by some of the supernatural mythology and the momentum slowed.
