Maria Rasin (née Ponomaryova)@maria_ponomaryova I have a theory that you don’t really know yourself until you stay at a hotel with a complimentary breakfast. At home, I’m a civilized person. I eat breakfast at a reasonable hour. I know what I’m having. I drink coffee from one particular cup because apparently I have standards. Then I enter a hotel breakfast buffet. Suddenly I’m a different woman. I need to try the omelet. I need the waffles. I need to know why there are six kinds of jam. I take fruit because I’m being healthy, pastries because I’m being realistic, and a yogurt because apparently I now have a wellness podcast. And then comes the most humiliating part: going back for something I absolutely did not need. You can tell yourself it’s “just coffee,” but five minutes later you’re standing there with a croissant, two pieces of bacon, and the confidence of someone who has never heard the word scales. Travel is strange. You go somewhere to discover the world and somehow end up discovering exactly how many mini croissants you can eat before 9 a.m.
