A researcher who spent three years helping build AI at OpenAI and Anthropic quit his job last week and left behind a warning that got 172 million views in 24 hours. Jacob Coxon resigned from Anthropic on September 8, 2026 and posted on X that neither OpenAI nor Anthropic was acting responsibly. He said both companies were racing straight toward self-improving superintelligence and gambling with everyone’s lives. He walked away two months before his equity was set to vest. After Coxon posted, an Anthropic alignment researcher named Evan Hubinger publicly agreed with him and said he personally put the odds of AI killing all humans within the next decade at greater than 10 percent. That came from a current employee at the company building the technology. Multiple other researchers have resigned from both Anthropic and OpenAI in recent months saying there are no adults in the room. AI is already affecting the job market with entry level employment down nearly 20 percent in sectors most exposed to the technology.
