Before the cameras, there was a sketchbook. ✏️ Growing up in Flint, Michigan, he spent hours drawing. An art teacher believed in him enough to photograph his work and submit scholarship applications on his behalf, helping him secure a place at Interlochen. He later received an art scholarship to Western Michigan University before earning a football scholarship. His early paid work included courtroom sketches. And during his NFL years, when he was cut from teams, he returned to the locker room with a different pitch: would anyone like their portrait painted? Those commissions helped support his family. One of his subjects was NFL player Ken Harvey, whom Crews painted in 1996. Their connection went beyond the canvas. Crews later revealed that Harvey also gave him the money he needed to move to Los Angeles and begin his entertainment career. So this isn’t a celebrity picking up a pencil as a new hobby.
