A wild female #elephant in Assam’s Raimona National Park has been successfully treated after getting her trunk entangled in a deadly wire snare. First spotted on 1 September near the Daogen Gonthong anti-poaching camp, the elephant was tracked for over two days while moving alongside her calf. On 7 September, a joint veterinary team comprising specialists Dr Prabhat Basumatary, FVO, Manas Tiger Reserve, Dr Daoharu Baro from Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), and Dr Pankaj Chakraborty, VO, State Veterinary Dispensary, Gossaigaon, intervened. The forest department team was led by Biswajit Basumatary, FRO, Sanfan Range. The team chemically immobilised her to treat a deep cut and soft-tissue injury caused by the embedded snare. After removing the wire and providing appropriate wound care, she was safely guided back into the forest. Forest officials are continuing to monitor her recovery. Hunting devices such as #snares pose a severe threat to wildlife, and prompt field intervention remains essential for mitigating life-threatening injuries.
