@loreworld - Lil Softie “The brief referenced 90s Skittles commercials, so I wanted to commit to that language completely, not just aesthetically, but in how we actually made the film. We embraced the small scale of the shoot by leaning into a lo-fi medium and the slightly imperfect practical effects of 90’s candy and cereal advertising. My DP Zoe proposed shooting on a Betacam, and it was something I knew I wanted to embrace fully. This became our hero medium. Around this time, I had been watching 80’s body horror films like The Stuff, and also saw Totally Fucked Up by Greg Araki for the first time, and that seeped into my treatment. I have so much love for practical effects where you can feel the mechanism, the humanism behind the illusions. The story culminates in our hero character being engulfed by the sofa, an idea initially brought to me as a CG solve, but avoiding CG or AI felt important to me. I wanted to lean into imagination instead of rendering too literally. Our awesome set designer Aaron and his crew physically pushed replica sections of the sofa together in-camera as it “comes to life.” That was really fun. I think the best part of working on this were the people who were involved, the sense of trust between us, and the clarity of the initial creative brief.
