The City of #Windhoek has introduced a Heavy Vehicle Access & Permit System to regulate the movement of vehicles weighing nine tonnes or more on the city’s road network. 🚛 The system requires operators who need access to restricted roads outside of the designated heavy-vehicle routes to apply for a permit at a cost of N$600. Monthly permit fees are set at N$120 for vehicles weighing between 9-15 tonnes, N$250 for 15-24 tonnes, N$350 for 24-32 tonnes and N$500 for vehicles above 32 tonnes. Heavy vehicles travelling through Windhoek without making deliveries, collections or conducting other business in the city are expected to use the bypass, while vehicles operating within Windhoek must follow designated heavy-vehicle routes. The municipality says the system is aimed at reducing damage to urban roads, congestion, safety risks, noise, emissions, and illegal truck parking. September has been designated as a transition period to allow operators to obtain permits and familiarise themselves with the requirements, with enforcement and fines set to begin on October 1st.
