I want to go on my first multi-day pilgrimage, visiting historic sites along the way, any suggestions ? This one was difficult to put into words, but what an extraordinary visit it was! This is St. Winefride’s Well in Hollywell, Cymru (Wales). It is often said to be the longest continuously visited pilgrimage site in Britain, and people still pilgrimage here to bathe in the exterior pool, which is connected directly to the spring. This is the martyrdom story of St. Winefride (there are slightly differing versions). In the 7th century, a woman named Gwenfrewi chose to dedicate her life to God and was under the tutelage of her religious instructor (often referred to as her uncle) Bueno. One day, a local prince – Caradoc came to her home and tried to seduce her/force himself on her. She fled but Caradoc chased after her, eventually catching up and b*heading her just as she reached the Beuno’s church. In the spot where her head rolled to a stop, a spring of water suddenly appeared. Beuno placed Winefride’s head back onto her body, prayed, and she came back to life, with only a white scar circling her neck as evidence of the trial. Several monarchs are believed to have visited the site, from Richard I to Henry V. A stone near the well marks the date when James II and Mary of Modena visited in 1686. #history #wales #cymru #britishhistory

@mariarosebooks Jacklynn, thank you for unlocking 🗝️ the history ~indeed, places like this ~ carry “ histories and each private story “ of each visitor ~ and their presence lingers in the air and these kinds of sights ( this overwhelming feeling, we too felt, while visiting some churches in Italy and Spain ~ I think 💭, could it be from every one tapping into our collective consciousness and spirituality?! @wethefars What a beautiful place and a compelling story, but I’m just thinking that we as a society have not advanced. This story highlights the perils of the fragile male ego a thousand years ago, unaliving women then as it still does today. I’m guessing Winifred would have chosen the bear too.

@chrissieka888 I live not far from Holywell and bathed in the pool as a 60 year birthday pilgrimage. 3 times around the pool saying prayers …..when you can get your breath….its very cold.!
