The dramatic airport run where someone declares their love before the plane takes off. Very cinematic. Very cute. And almost completely useless when your tire goes flat on the side of the road at 9 p.m. Because somewhere along the way, I realized that the biggest green flag isn’t romance. It’s reliability. It’s the person who says, “Don’t worry, I’ll handle it,” and somehow actually does. The person who shows up when they said they would. Who remembers the thing you mentioned three weeks ago. Who charges the portable battery before a trip. Who quietly solves problems before they become emergencies. Romance is wonderful. But romance is easy when everything is going well. Anyone can be charming over candlelight and expensive wine. The real magic is finding someone who remains dependable when life starts acting like a badly written reality show. Someone who doesn’t disappear when things get inconvenient. Someone whose words and actions are in a long-term committed relationship with each other. Because eventually, every couple experiences delayed flights, broken appliances, family drama, unexpected bills, missed exits, and moments where neither person has any idea what they’re doing. And in those moments, you don’t need a poet. You need a teammate. Ironically, that’s when the most romantic thing happens. Not the flowers. Not the grand gestures. Just the quiet certainty that no matter what ridiculous situation life invents next, you’ll never have to face it alone 🤍
