Historical Exploration with Jacklynn@byjacklynn I took a very short trip to York and it has quickly shot its way up to my top 5 cities/towns in the UK. There is quite literally history around every corner! Things I saw in York that were so old they gave me an existential crisis Hidden down an alleyway (also known as a snicket), a relic of the Middle Ages, over 800 years old The remains of a Norman house. Only two walls survive, and as I stood there I couldn’t help but be drawn to the window, wondering who once looked out of it Beneath an ordinary pub, the remains of a Roman Bathhouse. Stepping below felt like being transported to another time entirely The Shambles, one of the best-preserved medieval streets in the world It’s a place where time doesn’t feel linear. The past, present and everything in between seem to sit right beside each other, as though every moment that has happened here is still somehow present Something I wasn’t expecting to stumble upon – the house of a saint sentenced to death by ‘crushing’ and martyred in York in 1586 The crypt in York Minster. I always find church crypts particularly intriguing, but I’ve never been to one with visible Roman ruins beneath A doomstone showing the ‘mouth of Hell’, a macabre depiction of souls being pushed into a boiling cauldron by devils and demons Within it are scenes of greed, lust, and I couldn’t pull myself away. It was both conflicting and yet bewitching… The tomb of Saint William of York, who was canonised in 1227 A 1000-year-old book thought to have been made by Anglo-Saxon monks. To think something so fragile has survived the brutality of time The incredible chapter house, the most beautiful one I have seen so far. It dates from the 1280s Hi! @jondow2001 I can’t recall what the shops in the shambles were like 15 or 20 years ago, but on a visit last week it seemed to have turned into Harry Potter world :/
@lisaeks Thank you for this. When I stayed in York for about a week, it really had a very similar effect on me. And your comment about "past, present, and everything in between seem to sit right beside each other" utterly resonated for me.
