Ask yourself: Are the lips pale, pink, peachy or brown? Are there purple, blue or grey tones? Is the colour even or uneven? The same pigment can heal differently depending on the natural lip colour underneath.'.

A client with heavily pigmented lips may not be able to achieve a soft baby pink in one session. You may need to neutralise first, then gradually work towards the desired colour. Setting realistic expectations is part of good pigment selection.'.

A pigment that heals beautifully on one client can shift completely on the next. Fitzpatrick type tells you how skin responds. Lip colour tells you what you're working over. Desired result tells you where you're headed. Each one narrows the decision, none of them makes it for you. I assess the full picture first -then choose the pigment.'.

Choosing a lip tattoo pigment isn’t as simple as picking the prettiest colour in the bottle. One of the biggest mistakes I see is artists choosing a pigment based on how it looks in the bottle, without properly assessing the client’s lips first. If you’re just guessing, then your healed results are unlikely to match what you expected. The colour you see in the bottle is not necessarily the colour that will heal in the lips. Existing lip tone, undertones, melanin, previous tattooing, and the condition of the tissue all influence the final healed result. That’s why pigment selection should always be intentional, not based on instinct or hope. In this carousel, I’m sharing the 5 things I personally assess before choosing a pigment before every lip tattoo appointment. The more you understand why you’re choosing a colour, the more consistent, predictable, and beautiful your healed results will become.
