Synergy. That's the word I'll use to explain what must actually happen for a special surf session to go down. A "memorable" session comes in a lot of different forms and it isn't always about the biggest or the best waves. Sometimes just good company, an epic sunset, a beautiful moonrise, a rainbow or even snowfall can quickly elevate a mediocre surf experience, into that "special session" category. All of which require several generally uncontrollable factors to converge at a particular location and time at a particular spot that you chose to be in. This serendipitous moment comes in many forms, but usually requires some of the following ingredients in order to happen: The wind needs to be offshore or non-existent, the swell at the right size and direction, the tide at the right spot in the cycle, and the overall weather conditions at a particular location all have to come together. Very little of which can be controlled by any human I know... Surfing, like many other nature-based sports, is very reliant on what mother nature throws at you... Whoch makes it all the more special when a day like last Thursday rolled around and many of the elements aligned. Was it epic? No, it could have definitely been bigger. But was it really memorable and special? YOU BET. It was a super fun chest to head high very clean wave, with clear green water that was about 70° or so, air temp around 80°, deep blue skies with a few puffy white clouds and virtually nobody around but the people sitting under some umbrellas enjoying the beach. Part of the fun/frustration/surprise in surfing, is never REALLY knowing if the conditions will be good or not. Last Thursday was one of those rare Summer swells where everything kind of came together... The type of day that makes surviving NY winters worth it. Excited to see if Summer dishes out another one of them! 🌞 🌊 🏄🏼‍♂️
