A new two-year pilot program expands collaboration between Princeton University (@princeton) and the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) on student research aligned with the Lab's mission and advancing discoveries in plasma science and technology. The Collaborative Research in Plasma Science and Technology (CRPST) program formalizes joint advising and expands opportunities for Princeton graduate students in engineering, physics and related fields to conduct research at PPPL. Each student in the program is co-advised by one PPPL scientist and one Princeton faculty member. Students will spend at least one day per week at PPPL. The pilot is supported through a shared funding model in which CRPST provides half the funding for graduate student support each year, which is matched by funding from the Princeton faculty advisor's own research funds. Plasma is the fourth state of matter. Scientists at PPPL are tackling the world's toughest science and technology challenges with plasma, including developing fusion as a potentially limitless source of energy, gaining new understanding of the universe, creating the next generation of materials for microelectronics and quantum sensors and devices, and reimagining manufacturing processes.
